Old Cats and New Tricks

Tim Riter August 3, 2020

We hear it a lot, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” A more serious form, “People just don’t change.” A bit sceptical. But perhaps, if an independent, self-willed, and amoral stray cat can change, then dogs have hope. Maybe even people. We already had…

Find Your Fountain

Tim Riter July 27, 2020

Stressors abound right now. COVID-19 has disrupted so much of our lives. We can’t gather with friends and families and worship. People have lost jobs and housing. And in the ultimate disruption, over 146,000 have died just in the US, and over 650,000 worldwide. We face protests and sometimes riots in many cities as we struggle with responding to racism. Hurricane Hanna just hit Texas, one of the states hit hardest by COVID-19. Like they need more stress.

So how do we chill? Well…

See the Big Picture

Tim Riter July 20, 2020

That pic doesn’t look like much of a goal—the Motel 6 in Dillon MT. The spacious but sparse room had a good bed and an acceptable shower. But it had a larger meaning: I challenged myself and pushed my limits, and survived. Earlier we explored my Iron Butt attempt to ride over 1,000 miles on a bike in one day at age 70 (May 18 and June 15) but let’s keep a wise perspective and learn…

Breakfast on Rock Creek

Breakfast on Rock Creek

A Tale of Two Conversations

Tim Riter July 13, 2020

Needing regular mountain fixes, I headed up to my beloved Rock Creek: a narrow canyon thrusting into the heart of the Sierras, a nice stream tumbling down the lowest points, the dry land covered with Ponderosa Pines and aspens and meadows and enlivened with blue jays seeking handouts. The pic above shows my breakfast, where our story begins. I had just finished fajitas and eggs and bacon for breakfast and brought out my tablet to work on some poems, Unconventional posts and a book proposal when…

When Less Prayer is More

Tim Riter July 6, 2020

Prayer. Often, one of the greatest struggles that followers face. A conference leader once asked me to keynote their retreat, and like an idiot I didn’t first ask about the topic—she wanted prayer. Yeah, I still struggle with it. Then a friend’s recent Facebook post sparked a discussion between Leilani Smith and myself. That…

Father's Day

Tim Riter June 29, 2020

Guess it’s not too late to keep celebrating Father’s Day. About two weeks earlier, COVID-19 forced us to scrub a timeshare trip to Phoenix that would have begun on Father’s Day, and since the week was blocked out already, I decided to take a restorative trip to Rock Creek in the Sierras, my favorite trout stream. Driving up on Highway 395, I decided to dedicate the trip to Dad. Here’s why…

Home Brew

Tim Riter June 22, 2020

I realize some of my socially conservative readers may not fully agree with the topic of this post, but I encourage you to read on. Beer brewing provides a metaphor for how spiritual formation, or following Jesus, gets sidetracked so easily, often without our knowledge. Enjoy the message even as you avoid the brew. For those who make home brew, you’ll quickly get the point! For those who imbibe but don’t brew, you’ll like it too!

Find Your Limits

Tim Riter June 15, 2020

About a month ago, an “Unconventional” post examined our need to challenge ourselves, using the slogan, “If you don’t push your limits, you’ll never learn the true extent of your abilities and motivations and faith.”  I firmly believe that, and encourage all to wisely and strategically push the possible. But that coin has a reverse side. Only when we push our limits can we learn them. Othewise, we guess, we act in fear or foolishness. And wise folks…

A bit of an unreconstructed Jesus freak. Almost old enough to have known him when he walked this world. About 27 on the inside. Investing his life in university and teen students. Inveterate cross country motorcycle rider. Nature lover. Entranced with the power of written and spoken words. Still learning.
